Het internationale onderzoekscollectief #Bellingcat heeft acht nieuwe namen gepubliceerd van Russen en Oekraïense opstandelingen die direct of indirect betrokken waren bij het neerhalen van vlucht MH17.

Een van de nieuwe namen is die van Valeri Stelmach. Hij zou degene zijn die zijn commandant vlak voor de fatale aanval met een Buk-raket telefonisch meldde dat er een vliegtuig aankwam.

Een ander is Oleg Poelatov, de tweede man achter generaal-majoor Sergej Doebinski bij de militaire inlichtingendienst van de Oost-Oekraïense opstandelingen. De Russen Doebinksi en Poelatov speelden in juli 2014 een belangrijke rol bij het vervoer van de Buk-installatie van Rusland naar Oost-Oekraïne en weer terug. Ook een zekere Leonid Chartsjenko zou bij dat vervoer essentieel zijn geweest.

Bellingcat maakt niet duidelijk wie exact het bevel gaf voor het afvuren van de Buk of wie op de knop van de lanceerinstallatie drukte.

Persconferentie

Bellingcats rapport komt enkele uren voor een persconferentie in Nieuwegein van het internationale onderzoeksteam JIT, dat daar nieuwe ontwikkelingen in het strafrechtelijke onderzoek presenteert. Op dit moment informeert dit Joint Investigation Team nabestaanden achter gesloten deuren. Volgens de Oekraïense onderminister van Buitenlandse Zaken zal het JIT vier namen bekendmaken van verdachten die mogelijk worden vervolgd.

The international research collective #Bellingcat has published eight new names of Russians and Ukrainian insurgents who were directly or indirectly involved in the downing of flight MH17.

One of the new names is that of Valeri Stelmach. He would be the one who told his commander by telephone just before the fatal attack with a Buk rocket that a plane was arriving.

Another is Oleg Pulatov, the second man behind Maj. Gen. Sergei Dubinsky at the military intelligence service of the East Ukrainian insurgents. The Russians Dubinksi and Pulatov played an important role in July 2014 in transporting the Buk installation from Russia to Eastern Ukraine and back. A certain Leonid Chartsjenko would also have been essential in that transport.

Bellingcat does not make it clear who exactly gave the order to fire the Buk or who pressed the launcher button.

Press conference

Bellingcats report comes a few hours before a press conference in Nieuwegein by the international JIT investigation team, which presents new developments in criminal investigation there. This Joint Investigation Team is currently informing relatives behind closed doors. According to the Ukrainian Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, the JIT will announce four names of suspects who may be prosecuted
